Chemical Treatment Against Gypsy Moth in Cherkasy Forestry
Next week, weather permitting, a chemical treatment will be carried out in the Cherkasy Forestry to exterminate forest pests by ground spraying. Last autumn, specialists from the forestry, together with experts from the Kyiv Forest Protection Enterprise, identified an increased concentration of gypsy moth outbreaks in common oak stands of the Ruskopolianske and Dubiivske forest districts. This year, the total area requiring treatment was determined to be 1,734 hectares. However, due to sanitary protection zones around settlements and water sources, only 1,565 hectares have been approved for treatment.

During a forest pathology survey of pine stands in the Bir area of Zavhorodnie Forestry, Izium Forest Enterprise of Kharkiv Regional Forestry and Hunting Management, conducted jointly with the enterprise's forest protection service, the death of red pine sawfly larvae due to a viral infection was observed. Forest pathologists from the Supervision and Forecasting Department conducted a survey of deciduous plantations in Babai Forestry of the "Zhovtneve LG" State Enterprise under the Kharkiv Regional Forestry and Hunting Administration to identify early spring leaf-eating pest outbreaks. The survey was productive—caterpillars of the green oak tortrix and various geometrid moths were found. Using modern unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for forest monitoring is common in European Union countries. In Ukraine, forestry research institutions are just beginning to explore this technology. In July-August 2018, test flights of a PD1900 UAV were conducted over the experimental forestry of the "SF UkrNDILGA" enterprise. Aerial photography and video recording were performed from altitudes of 150 and 80 meters. The obtained materials were processed using specialized software. Favorable conditions for such operations include windless and cloudless weather in the morning.

Almost a decade has passed since the last significant leaf damage was recorded in the plantations of the Babai Forestry, part of the Zhovtneve Forest Enterprise of the Kharkiv Regional Forestry and Hunting Management. However, forestry officials responsible for forest protection, including the head of the forest protection department, V.V. Zubko, and leading engineer L.V. Shapovalova, annually send branches from model pedunculate oaks of an early form for laboratory analysis. This is done to determine the species composition of early spring leaf-eating pests and assess the risk of forest damage.

The New Year and Christmas holidays have come to an end. The Department of Supervision and Forecasting continues the laboratory analysis of the overwintering stock of cocoons of the common pine sawfly (Diprion pini L.) after cold stratification under conditions as close to natural as possible. As the pest gradually accumulates effective temperatures, our forest pathologist technician, Alona Batulina, conducts familiar manipulations with samples sent from the Izyum Forestry Enterprise of the Kharkiv Regional Forestry and Hunting Management – distributing cocoons by viability and sex characteristics.

Sometimes, we receive questions regarding the scope of work during the autumn-winter period. In this regard, we provide some information on the laboratory analysis of forest pathological samples.
The forest protection service collects pine needles according to established methodologies in forest protection practice. The sent forest pathological material is carefully examined by forest pathologists in the monitoring and forecasting department under a magnifying lamp to determine the quantitative and qualitative indicators of the viability of the overwintering stage of the pine sawfly (RSP).
Currently, Kharkivlisozakhyst is conducting a laboratory analysis of overwintering pest reserves and forecasting the forest pathological situation for the upcoming 2019 year. The forestry protection service of the Lyman Forestry Enterprise collected samples of common pine sawfly cocoons from the forest litter and sent them for laboratory analysis. The cocoons were collected in the third decade of September, so we artificially created conditions for stratification at low temperatures. After this procedure, the cocoons were brought indoors for a gradual temperature increase above the threshold level.
Some insects play a crucial role in maintaining forest health. They help control pest populations, pollinate plants, and contribute to the ecosystem's balance. Recognizing their importance allows us to adopt more sustainable forest management practices.
