We invite colleagues and all interested parties to the State Specialized Forest Protection Enterprise "Kharkivlisozahyst" to learn more about the new laboratory and the technology of breeding Thanasimus formicarius in laboratory conditions.

The event will be attended by the Deputy Head of the State Forest Resources Agency, Volodymyr Bondar, and the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Turkey in Kharkiv, Volodymyr Bilyi.

The event will take place on January 29, 2020, at 14:00.

Location: Kharkiv region, Kharkiv district, Pokotylivka, Nezalezhnosti street, 127 (Kharkivlisozahyst).

Apart from timely logging, measures can be implemented to attract birds, mainly woodpeckers and tits, which can reduce the bark beetle population by 10-30%. Some countries, such as Austria, Canada, the USA, and Turkey, use a biological method of breeding and releasing predatory insects, which is now being introduced in Ukraine.

The State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine is implementing a joint project under which the General Directorate of Forestry of Turkey has provided Kharkivlisozahyst with laboratory equipment for breeding predatory insects. These insects can be grown in laboratory conditions and then released into the forest as part of an integrated forest protection strategy against bark beetles.

Thanasimus formicarius, or the ant beetle, is capable of locating and destroying the eggs, larvae, pupae, and adult bark beetles under the tree bark, ensuring biological protection of trees.
