Recently, there has been a sharp increase in the areas affected by very dangerous phytophages, pine web-spinning sawflies, in the pine plantations of the Forest-Steppe and Steppe zones of Ukraine. Among the many species of sawflies damaging pine needles, the red-headed sawfly Acantholyda erythrocephala and the star sawfly Lyda nemoralis stand out.

Recently, the spread of the pine bark bug (Aradus cinnamomeus Panz.) has been increasing. For a long time, this species was considered harmless, and its presence in plantations was ignored. The weakening of young pines caused by this insect was usually attributed to droughts, soil conditions, and other factors.

The pine bark bug is widespread in many European and CIS countries, wherever Scots pine grows. In Ukraine, it is particularly harmful in the steppe and forest-steppe zones.

Spring is a busy time for forestry – planting, the beginning of the fire-hazardous period, and pest control. The forests of Left-Bank Ukraine are home to persistent pest outbreaks.
