With the budding of tree and shrub species in the forest, the harmful activity of insects from the early spring phenological complex begins. These pests damage leaves, contribute to the development of infectious diseases like oak powdery mildew, and sometimes - with prolonged defoliation over several years - can reduce tree growth. The most common representatives of this group include the green oak tortrix, hawthorn leaf roller, mottled umber moth, winter moth, and others.
To prevent damage to plantations by these pests, it's necessary to systematically and timely monitor the emergence of leaf-eating pest outbreaks and implement measures aimed at increasing plantation resilience. To maintain biological control of harmful insect populations, favorable conditions should be created to attract birds and beneficial entomofauna. Therefore, SSFPE "Kharkivlisozakhyst" together with forest protection services of state forestry enterprises has begun monitoring early spring complex pests in deciduous plantations of Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
