Ash Dieback - Situation in Europe and Ukraine (article) - authors K.V. Davydenko, V.L. Meshkova

The article "EUROPEAN ASH (FRAXINUS EXCELSIOR) DIEBACK - SITUATION IN EUROPE AND UKRAINE" provides an overview of publications mainly from 2013-2014 and the authors' own data regarding ash dieback disease caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (anamorph Chalara fraxinea).

The disease is currently known in over 25 European countries, and since 2010 - in Ukraine. Molecular methods have confirmed the presence of the pathogen in Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Kyiv, and Zhytomyr regions. The main symptoms of the disease include gradual crown dieback, necrotic spots on shoot bark, wood and leaf discoloration, leaf necrosis, premature leaf fall, and stem necrosis. Research is focused on studying the pathogen's life cycle, the virulence of individual strains, the susceptibility of Fraxinus sp. to infection, as well as developing recommendations to prevent the negative consequences of disease spread for forestry and forest ecosystems.
