The Importance of Assessing Tree Health Conditions

Conducting phytopathological surveys (inventory) of green spaces in Kharkiv city

Trees are not only part of nature but also crucial elements of our urban environment that provide oxygen, improve air quality, and serve as filters for atmospheric emissions. However, despite their natural grandeur, trees can pose potential threats to surroundings without proper maintenance. This is why timely tree inspections are essential for assessing their condition and preventing hazards to citizens.

The State Specialized Forest Protection Enterprise "Kharkivlisozakhyst" is working to improve the overall sanitary condition of green spaces in Kharkiv city at the request of the specialized municipal enterprise "Kharkivzelenbud" of Kharkiv City Council.

Forest pathologists conduct special surveys to determine the sanitary condition of trees, assessing each tree through visual inspection to identify causes of physiological deterioration. During these inspections, they evaluate:

  • Physiological condition of trees
  • Infections from fungal diseases
  • Damage from stem pests
  • Impact of low temperatures
  • Mechanical damage
  • Degree of hazard (risk of falling)

When necessary, samples are collected for laboratory analysis to identify specific harmful organisms. Based on survey results, recommendations are provided for each inspected tree (monitoring, crown reduction, removal, etc.).

Primary reasons for classifying trees as hazardous include:

  • Rot caused by fungal infections
  • Wind damage (root system disruption, branch breakage)
  • Branch desiccation
  • Infestation by stem pests (accelerating tree mortality and spreading fungal spores)

Mechanical damage to trunks (from human activity or low temperatures) can allow water, fungal spores, and bacteria to enter, leading to wood decay and the formation of internal cavities that reduce tree stability. Dry branches and hazardous trees can break during wind gusts, potentially causing irreparable harm to people and property.

The life, safety, health, and aesthetic satisfaction of citizens are the top priorities for Kharkiv's municipal services. We believe urban greenery should be properly maintained through:

  • Systematic care
  • Rejuvenation
  • Renewal
  • Timely removal of hazardous, dead, or damaged trees
  • Crown pruning to preserve decorative appearance

Prompt tree care preserves the city's "green lungs" by preventing mass spread of infectious diseases and stem pests. New young saplings will replace removed dead trees. Together, we can make our city greener and safer for all residents.
