The city of Chernihiv is rich in historical, cultural, and spiritual landmarks. One such place is the "Svyate" protected area. According to legends, this site was used for the baptism of Chernihiv residents in 989. Over time, the lake in this area has transformed into a transitional, or mesotrophic, swamp. A few years ago, pine trees began appearing in the area, but their needles started turning yellow, and soon the trees began to die in large numbers. The cause of this was later identified as bark beetles, which were destroying the foliage on a massive scale.
Helping Chernihiv Forests Fight Bark Beetles
The Kharkivlisozakhyst forestry protection service, in cooperation with the Chernihiv City Housing and Utilities Department, has implemented integrated forest protection measures in the "Svyate" reserve. Infested trees were selected for the introduction of predatory insects, specifically clerid beetles, which were bred in laboratory conditions and released to combat the bark beetle population. Monitoring of pest and beneficial insect populations in the protected area will continue throughout the year.
