The employees of the Kharkiv Forest Protection Service recently treated the local natural landmark, the "Harkusha Oak." This oak, named after the 17th-century Cossack leader Semen Harkusha, is located in Hai village, Romny district, Sumy region. The ancient oak is over 450 years old, reaching approximately 35 meters in height and more than 6 meters in circumference. This centuries-old tree is the main attraction of the village, drawing visitors from nearby settlements and tourists. Harkusha, whose name the oak bears, was a Zaporizhian Cossack and leader. He was born in the village of Berezan, Minsk province. The oak has been officially recognized as a botanical natural monument of Ukraine and Sumy region. It is also included in the list of 500 outstanding trees of Ukraine and is protected by Ukrainian law.
Preservation of Botanical Monument
To preserve the tree and extend its lifespan, several measures were taken: cleaning of the hollow walls from rotten wood to healthy layers, disinfection with a copper sulfate solution, filling the hollow inside the trunk with bricks and cement mortar, installation of metal braces, and placement of an official informational and protective sign. Additionally, the treated cavity surface was thoroughly disinfected with an antiseptic to prevent infestation by wood-boring pests and fungal diseases.
