Pest Control Measures in Kharkiv Region

To protect forest plantations in the Kharkiv region, from June 5-7, 2018, forest protection measures were carried out in the area of mass reproduction of the solitary sawfly weaver (Acantholyda hieroglyphica Christ.). Aerosol technology GARD-MN and the chemical preparation "Fastak" 10% EC were used in pine plantations of the Izyum and Pridynetsk forestries of the State Enterprise "Izyum Forestry" of the Kharkiv Regional Forestry and Hunting Administration.

The solitary sawfly weaver usually damages young 2-4-year-old Scots pine plantations, and sometimes even 10-year-old pines. This pest is especially dangerous for nurseries. The harmfulness of the larvae lies in the fact that they eat the needles on current-year shoots, wrapping them in webbing, leaving only the so-called "stumps" of the needles. Weakened young trees experience reduced growth and lose resistance to adverse factors; in some cases, branches and tops die off, and sometimes young trees dry out completely.

Such pest outbreaks pose a serious threat to the ecological balance of forest plantations. Effective control measures are crucial to preserving the health and productivity of pine forests.
