On May 28, 2025, in the "Hryhorivskyi Bor" tract in Kharkiv, a release of the ant beetle (Thanasimus formicarius) took place - a beneficial entomophage that is a natural enemy of many dangerous forest pests, particularly bark beetles. The event was organized by specialists of SSE "Kharkivlisozakhyst" as part of implementing integrated forest protection methods.
Integrated forest protection involves a comprehensive approach to maintaining the health of forest ecosystems with minimal use of chemical agents. One of the key methods is biological control of pest populations using natural predators like the ant beetle. Both adult individuals and larvae of this entomophage feed on various species of bark beetles, preventing mass outbreaks of their populations. This allows for effective containment of pest spread without harm to the environment, animals, or people.
Hryhorivskyi Bor is a unique natural site. Over the past year, it has suffered significant damage due to natural phenomena and military actions, but is gradually recovering thanks to the efforts of municipal services and forest protection specialists. The release of beneficial insects is another step toward restoring the natural balance in this important ecosystem.
